Meet Clover: A Resilient Spirit Finding New Purpose
by Siiri Cole on 11/17/24
At Charming Pony Parties, we’ve had the privilege of welcoming many remarkable animals into our care, each with their own unique story. Today, we’d like to introduce you to Clover, a horse whose journey to our farm is both heartwarming and inspiring.
Clover’s Journey from the Slaughter Yard
Clover’s story began in a slaughter yard, where she was inseparable from her companion, Dolly. When we found Clover, we knew we couldn’t leave her behind. Her loyalty to Dolly was touching, and it was clear that she deserved a chance at a new life.
Upon arriving at our farm, Clover was estimated to be around 7 years old by our veterinarian. She had an ulcer, likely the result of the stress and frequent relocations she had endured—moving from Arizona to Texas and back to Arizona before finding her way to us. Despite her tough past, Clover’s spirit remained strong.
A Horse with Training and Challenges
Clover came to us with some impressive training. She knew how to behave under saddle, a sign that she had been well-trained at some point in her life. However, as we observed her more closely, it became apparent that she experienced discomfort when carrying a rider over 100 pounds. Further examination, including x-rays, revealed that Clover has arthritis in her back.
This diagnosis meant that traditional riding could be challenging and painful for Clover, particularly when carrying heavier riders. It was clear that Clover would need a different approach to her care and work to ensure her comfort and well-being.
Finding a New Purpose
Our goal with Clover is to provide her with a fulfilling and pain-free life. While she may not be suited for traditional riding, we believe she can still find joy and purpose through a different avenue. We’re excited to explore teaching Clover to drive a cart. This new role could offer her several benefits:
A New Job: Horses thrive when they have a purpose, and learning to drive a cart will give Clover a meaningful job to do. It’s a way for her to stay active and engaged, which is vital for her overall happiness.
Supporting Her Health: Driving a cart can help strengthen Clover’s back muscles, which may alleviate some of the discomfort associated with her arthritis. Additionally, it provides a way for her to exercise without the strain of carrying a rider.
Managing Pain: Along with the new role, Clover will benefit from medication to help manage her arthritis and ensure she remains as comfortable as possible. Our team is committed to providing her with the best care to address her pain and enhance her quality of life.
